Show spotters

A family game for film night: each person watches for a moment that fits one of their meaning cards.

Ní neart go cur le chéileThere is strength in unity.Meaning, pronunciation and source →

What to do

  1. Cut out the cards. Read each saying and its meaning together, and listen to them on their pages if you can.
  2. Deal out the meaning cards so each person has two or three.
  3. Watch the film or episode as normal. Do not pause it.
  4. When a character does something that fits one of your cards, write one or two words on your paper to remind you.
  5. At the end, take turns to show a card and explain the moment you spotted. If the family agrees it fits, you win a point.
  6. The person with the most points chooses what to watch next time.

Questions to talk about

  • Which meaning came up most in the story?
  • Was there a moment that fitted a card nobody was holding?

You will need

  • The printed card sheet, cut out
  • Scissors
  • A film or episode the family wants to watch
  • A pencil and a scrap of paper for each person

Make it fit

Simpler: Give each person one card, and allow pauses so younger players can point out a moment straight away.

More of a stretch: Find a moment for every card in your hand, and say which saying would have been good advice for the character.
