Relay match

A walking relay: each player fetches a saying card and the meaning card they think goes with it.

Is fearr an tsláinte ná na táinteHealth is better than wealth.Meaning, pronunciation and source →

What to do

  1. Before the game, read each saying and its meaning together and play its audio from the saying page.
  2. Clear a space. Put each team’s cards face up at the far end, saying cards in one row and meaning cards in another.
  3. Teams line up at the start. The rule is walking only, no running.
  4. The first player in each team walks to their cards, picks one saying card and the meaning card they think goes with it, and walks back.
  5. The team checks the pair with the teacher, who uses the list of sayings on this page. A right pair stays. A wrong pair goes back, and a later player can try it again.
  6. The next player goes when the last one is back. The game ends when every team has matched all six pairs, or when time is up. Cheer every team home.

Questions to talk about

  • Which pair did your team get wrong first? What helped you fix it?
  • Pick one meaning. When might someone in your family say it?

You will need

  • One printed card sheet per team, cut out
  • Scissors
  • A clear space, such as a hall or a room with desks pushed back
  • A device to play the audio on each saying page

Make it fit

Simpler: Use three sayings only and let the team call out help to the player at the cards.

More of a stretch: When a pair is right, the player has to give a real-life example before the next player can go.
