Go n-éirí an bóthar leat

May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

About this saying

This is the blessing everyone means by "an Irish blessing": road, wind, sun, rain, and the palm of God’s hand. Its fame is real and its paper trail is mostly English. The verse spread through emigrant culture, hymnals and greeting cards in English, and the Irish text travels with it as its accepted rendering. The opening line’s story, a workaday idiom for succeeding read literally as a rising road, is told on Go n-éirí an bóthar leat and in our article on the blessing.
